My colleague is surprised by the choice of organ in the picture for playing jazz. He is wondering how that organ lends itself to the genre(!)

Also, he is wondering what kind of jazz music you like to play.

Ok, I'm guessing it's you Chris typing this comment. I'm surprised that your colleague is surprised at the choice of organ. Actually, this is the perfect organ for jazz organ music. Rather than giving a tedious explanation here, a visit to these sites would give a clearer picture.

My favourite kind of jazz?

Big Band (with lots of brass)
Swing (the sing-able/dance-able kind)
Latin jazz (especially Bossanova)
Fusion (when I'm in the mood for some synthesizer/electronic sounds)

Is your colleague a jazz fan/keyboard player?

Yes, Chris here.

He says he is a both a fan and a keyboard player. He plays piano, studying with James Boyle at Aswara. I'm sure that means something to you :-)

Cheers

Wow, James Boyle. Son of the legendary (late) Jimmy Boyle. A "chip of the old block" I see.

Although James is a jazz performer, I wonder if he actually teaches jazz (or to what extent) in ASWARA? I think the courses offered there emphasises on Malaysian music and traditional instruments.

Apparently they DO teach contemporary as well as traditional styles of music and dance. James IS a lecturer there.

My friend goes there for lessons once a week. He is a nut-case who sits next to me and plays air-piano (while most people play air-guitar!)

Oh, they do, I see.

Nut-case? He sounds like a "cool" guy :-)

Any chance he might be keen to watch this concert? I've some tickets left...

Yes, he is keen! I will chat to you on Sunday...
