A Special Student

Did you enjoy Weng Hoe's performance? "I've heard better" is probably what you are thinking. Yes, normally, I would expect a student's performance to be better than this. But this is no normal performance. You see, Weng Hoe is a very "special" student.

Weng Hoe was born a slow child, a special child. His parents realised the need to raise him so that one day he can be independant enough to stand on his own. That takes a lot of special education and other extra-curricular activities to develop his skills and as stimuli for his brain.

One of the things they had wanted to do was to let him take up music lessons as a form of therapy to promote brain development. According to Weng Hoe's mom, Vivian, it took her more than 2 years to finally be able to do that as the music teachers they approached earlier were not interested when they found out that he is a special child.

Well, I'm not one to discriminate or be picky about whom I teach. In fact, I've had three "sixty-something" silver-haired students before. One of whom is a lady whose husband tags along with her to class with a tote bag in hand. I later found out that the bag contains her "emergency" medication as she has a heart ailment! Whenever it's her lesson, time seem to stand still. I finally understood the true meaning of the word p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e.

Then there's the man with only four fingers, he's missing a thumb! There's the lady with very bad "BO"... arrrgh..phew!! And another one whose perfume actually rids the room of mosquitoes... after every lesson I would have to leave the door open to "air" the room, so that the next person using the room won't faint. Not forgetting little ones who are so hyper they won't be in the same spot for more than 2 seconds. I actually have to hold on to them with one hand and teach with the other! The list goes on...

Coming back to Weng Hoe. I took him in with the understanding that the music lessons were meant to be just a form of therapy and to not expect too much. But little did I know that I would be pleasantly surprised at his progress. Within a few months, he has managed to play and co-ordinate both hands on the keyboards with his foot on the pedals.

"Normal" people have given up learning to play the organ within months and these include piano teachers(!) because they just could not co-ordinate their hands and feet. So, for a special child to be able to do that, now that's something else.

Impressed with his progress, Weng Hoe's parents recently bought him a new organ which he enjoys playing very much. He has also been an inspiration to me as I find satisfaction in seeing him progress from week to week. Most of all, it encourages me to just see him enjoy music in his own special way with the gift God has given him.

Yes, Weng Hoe, Jesus loves you, this I know...

A Day to Remember...

is a significant day to remember. Beginning today, I'm going to have to dig deeper into my pocket to pay for lunch and the parking fee when I go to the gym. As I've mentioned in one of my blogs, Midvalley Megamall's new car park rates takes effect from today. In addition to that, my regular lunch joint, the Oasis Food Court has also started to impose a 5% Govt tax on all food items.

Let's see, if I do not want to pay more than RM1 for parking, then I'll have to stay no more than 2 hours at the gym and then have the remaining 1 hour for a quick bite, do some chores like grocery shopping/banking and then leave! Phew... very stressful lah!

So, I think I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to pay twice the amount for parking! Anyway, I don't want to have to rush my workouts. I want to enjoy the facilities provided. Like relaxing in the outdoor jacuzzi after a workout... or taking a dip in the pool... or laying on the deck chair & enjoying the breeze while listening to nice music or sermons on my MP3 player. It's when I can shut the rest of the world out and truly be relaxed.

You know, it was during those moments, I've hit on new ideas for my music or music-related stuff. Often times, we are too busy or too pre-occupied to be relaxed enough to "listen". Even when we're at home, we are not completely relaxed. You agree?

The Oasis Food Court. Lots of variety. You'll be spoilt for choices. Good food at reasonble prices (until now?). Well, I think it's still cheap even with the 5% tax. Noooo, I'm not paid to write these things.

Here's the proof. The receipt from my regular "Chap Fan" stall showing the 5% Govt tax.

Oh yes, I think the new car park rate has resulted in a slight improvement in the parking situation. As I was driving out of the Zone H area, I noticed quite a number of empty bays. They are usually full. And there were more people leaving the car park than usual.

Should we be hopeful?

Jigsaw anyone?

Did you have fun with the jigsaw puzzle in my previous post? Okay, if you have lots of time on your hands and really want to have fun with the real thing, let me know. That is, if you are living in the Klang Valley area.
I have this 5,000 piece, yes, FIVE THOUSAND piece jigsaw puzzle that's waiting to be done.

Actually, it's about half done. Why? Well, I was only half way through solving the puzzle when I received the keys to my new apartment. Then almost all my free time was taken up running around getting things done and fixing up the apartment. Well, you know how it is. Then, it was time to move house. Not something one looks forward to. Well, at least not the packing and then the unpacking. So, the half completed puzzle had to go back into its box.

Flashback to around 1997...

I took up a new hobby - doing jigsaw puzzles!
Not unusual for me to stay up till the wee hours of the morning just enjoying the challenge. Completed 4 puzzles that range from 1,000 to 1,800 pieces.
They decorate the walls of my apartment now.

I started with this one - 1,000 pieces.

Next was this painting of a beautiful English garden
- also 1,000 pieces.
Funny thing, after I finished, I found an extra piece!
Just wondering if there's a piece missing from another box. Someone may be having a puzzle with a hole in it! Glad it's not me. How frustrating it would've been!!

Then came this 1,500-piece jigsaw of a colourful
Batik painting of a kampung scene.

The fourth is my favourite. It's a painting of the Nativity scene. This 1,800 piece puzzle is from Italy and is of excellent quality. No two pieces are cut alike, unlike the locally produced ones above.

After these 4 puzzles, I was itching for something more challenging. So, when I saw a 5,000 piece puzzle on sale at a tempting 40% discount, I just grabbed it!

Now, fast forward to 2007...

Eight years later, this 5,000 piece puzzle is still in the box. Is there anyone keen enough to take over and finish the puzzle?

It's a painting titled "The Return of The Prodigal Son" by French artist James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902).

No, I'm not kidding. It is 5,000 pieces.
The completed puzzle would measure approximately
157cm by 99.5cm (61" by 39").

However, be warned!

Once you get started, it can be addictive.

So, any takers?

Max Takano performs...

If you do not know who Masashi "Max" Takano is, it's okay. If you play the Electone organ and yet do not know who this guy is, then you must be from Mars! He's absolutely one of my favourite performers. When he's in town, I make it a point never to miss his concert.

Off stage, he's a really friendly, down-to-earth and jovial guy. I recall the fun I had being the compere at one of his concerts in Kuala Lumpur many years ago. We kinda "clicked" and got along very well. His talents have taken him to many countries and he has legions of fans all over the world.

In this video, he performs his arrangement of the ever popular theme song from "Ghostbusters" on Yamaha's flagship Electone organ, the ELX-1.

Of cheese crackers and metropolitan cows...

You know how it is. The fun you get out of reading those labels in Chinese and Japanese "English", or as we call it, Engrish. Nothing beats a visit to the local supermarket and stores if you are looking for a chuckle or two. Look for those that carry lots of imported stuff from these countries. Best of all, it's free. Don't need to buy joke books. After you've read them, they are not funny anymore second time around. Some more, expensive lah! The supermarket stuff is always replenished with new ones, so it's always fresh!

So, what's this post all about? Okay, I'm getting to that. I was grocery shopping one day and saw this packet of cheese crackers. Actually, I was more interested in the packaging than the crackers. Why? The words "feeling of metropolis" with a picture of a cow next to it was the reason why. Very amusing. Look at it, if you can figure out what it means, please do tell me.

Manufactured in, where else, China of course!

By the way, the crackers don't taste half bad!

Midvalley's New Car Park Rates

Well, it was only a matter of time this would happen. Not that it's a bad thing though, considering the new rates are still quite reasonable. Hopefully, this will ease the parking problem in Midvalley a little.

I'm sure many of you have experienced the nightmare of looking for a parking space and in the time taken to do that, you could have already watched a nice movie in the cineplex!

One time, there was this lady who angrily confronted the payment counter attendant over her failure to find a space to park and yet had to pay just to get out.

Given the fact that the present flat rate of RM1 (weekdays) per entry is so cheap, people actually park their cars in Midvalley Megamall and then take the commuter to the city to work. Things will only get worse, when occupants of the recently completed twin office towers start moving in, as they share the same car park.

Come 26th March, we'll see if it would be a little easier getting a parking space in Midvalley Megamall... unless, city folks are getting so affluent, they will not even bat an eyelid!

Quotable quotes

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Thomas Chisholm was born in 1866 in the state of Kentucky. He wrote over 1200 hymns, such as "Living For Jesus" and "O, to be Like Thee". But the hymn we remember the most is "Great Is Thy Faithfulness".

Chisholm did not write this hymn because something great and miraculous had taken place in his life. No, he wrote this because over his entire life he had learned to see the greatness of God. At the age of 75, he wrote:

"My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness."

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness,
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessing all mine, with ten thousand beside!

"Bibles"

Just how many kinds of "bibles" are there? No, I'm not talking about the different versions and translations of the Holy Book.

I was browsing books at the MPH bookstore located at Midvalley Megamall yesterday and a book titled "The Crystal Bible" caught my eye. Hmm... don't you think that for a book to be called a "bible", it has to be the ultimate book, the final authoritative word on that subject? So, if I wanted to know everything about crystals, is this the only book I will ever need?

Well, curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see how many of these "bibles" there were. A casual stroll along the aisles between the rows and rows of books revealed that there were many more "bibles" on the shelves. These are some of them.

The Spells Bible? Wow, MPH caters to a very wide demographics! That certainly takes care of the witches, warlocks, sorcerers and magicians!

The most number of "bibles" found within a single category was in the Computer/IT section of the bookstore.

At the end of the day, there's only one bible that matters the most and that is the Christian Holy Bible. It is the one, true, final, authoritative word of God for the salvation of man.

No other "bible" even comes close to the Holy Bible because it's rich content is God-inspired (2 Tim. 3:16).

It is not just a history book.

It is not just a story book.

It is not just a book of poetry.

It is a book about Jesus the Messiah of the Old Testament and Jesus the Saviour in the New Testament. It contains the teachings of Jesus for us so that by faith, we can look forward with confidence to the future.

Amen.

Renewing friendships

The Chinese New Year break was a good time for catching up with relatives and friends. All the more reason for having those lunches, dinners and get-togethers. It was also an opportunity for me to meet up with some former music students of mine. These are the ones who have made an impression on me during the course of their music studies and whose friendship I treasure. I have made it a point to try and keep in touch and meet up for a meal whenever possible. Some are in colleges and universities now while others have graduated with Bachelor's & Master's Degrees and even a PhD in their various fields of study.

Khen Joon is a former student I managed to meet up with recently. We went for a "mamak" meal at the ABC Big Town Cafe. I remember him as a 6-year-old when he first started taking music lessons from me. He was not really keen then and always "didn't feel well" on music lesson day.

Gradually (and may I add, patiently), I managed to instill the love of music in him. With the constant encouragement from his parents and I, his interest grew and he became one of my best students. His renewed interest in music also led him to take up and excel in the guitar as well. He is now pursuing an engineering degree.

In the following video, he plays the theme song from "Back To The Future". It was taken a couple of years ago. Although its was not his best performance, regretably, it was the only one recorded.

Musical Water Feature

This interesting water-driven music "box" was one of the items displayed at the Garden & Landscape Fest held at the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens. I was there on the last day and as expected, it was crowded. It involved a lot of walking as the exhibition covered quite a fair bit of the grounds.

If you want to see more pictures of the event, go to My Photo Album.

Spam!

Don't you just hate spam mails!! They flood your inbox like, well, those pesky Christmas Island baby crabs (if you watched the video clip in my previous post).

I have a few e-mail accounts and over time, practically every one of them gets spam-med! I had one that gets an average of 60-70 junk mails a day and can go up to 100 on some days. In the end I had to terminate that account. I noticed that the shorter, simpler e-mail addresses were easier targets.

It made me rather curious as to just how many junk mails I would collect if I did not delete them. So I decided to leave one of my Yahoo accounts alone and this is what I've collected so far. Yes, 20,981 junk mails in just a little over 15 months. That's about 1,398 junk mails every month! Below is the screenshot of that account.

Invasion of the "crab-by" kind

You would've probably heard about the natural phenomenon that occurs on Christmas Island every year. It's the spawning season of the Red Crabs that causes them to migrate from land to sea. The whole town is invaded by these clawed critters during this time.

Now, caught on film, watch this amazing event that happens between October and December every year. Enjoy...

Dream car

It was love at first sight. The beautifully polished & shiny body made even more stunning by the glossy photo in the magazine. I'm sold! I'm going to get one.

Only one problem... I can't afford it!

So, what do I do? Watch the video clip...

Will he ever get there?

This animation is pretty cool don't you think so?

"Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou" Job 35:5 KJB

Clouds
. How many of us actually take time to look to the "heavens" in appreciation of God's creation. Rarely do we even look upwards. Some of us don't even have that privilege as we leave for work before sunrise and only return home after the sun has set! When was the last time you stopped to "smell the roses"?

These pictures were taken from my apartment window.

With such a beautiful clear blue sky, this picture brings to mind two of my favourite songs - "All Heaven Declares, the Glory of the Risen Lord" and "On A Clear Day, You Can See Forever" which is from an original Broadway musical of the same name.

Cloud formations can take the shape of just about anything and actually be fun to watch. Look at the following pics, what do you see?

A toy bunny?

Galloping horse? Doggie?

Someone once mentioned that just lying on the ground looking up at clouds floating by is so therapeutic. I do agree.

If we can find beauty in the simple and mundane things, then we will find ourselves closer to our Creator.

"For everything God has created is good..."

1 Timothy 4:4

"Boxing" day?

It's almost time for the CNY decorations to go back into the boxes. Every year the box fills up a little more as new stuff are added. Very soon we will need a new box!
